Press Release Regarding The Efforts To Establish A Civilian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (prt) In Shibirgan In North Afghanistan , 19.04.2010

In conjunction with Turkey’s efforts to establish a civilian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Shibirgan in north Afghanistan, a political memorandum clarifying the modalities of interaction and coordination with the Swedish-led PRT in the region has been concluded on 16 April 2010.

The Turkish “Jowzjan PRT”, which will attain its initial operational capability in the coming months, will be responsible for development and capacity building, including the training of the Afghan Security Forces, both in Jowzjan and Sar-e Pol provinces. The PRT will be based on the successful civilian-led PRT model comprising both military and police components, implemented by Turkey in Wardak province since 2006.

The decision to establish the Jowzjan PRT, which will be the 27th PRT in Afghanistan is based on the request and consent of the Afghan Government. The PRT will enable Turkey to further enhance her contributions to Afghanistan and to the friendly and brotherly Afghan people, with which we have historical bonds.

Thereby, our substantial and constructive efforts both on the ground and on diplomatic platforms, which are highly appreciated in Afghanistan and by the international community will be carried forward to a new level.
